Albuquerque Mayor Tomas Zamara understands that politics is like playing football on a muddy field. If you don’t get dirty, you’re not giving your all. But dirty politics is not his style.
The Democrats' Barack Obama is drawing adoring crowds with his uplifting speeches, and Zamara’s GOP bosses are pressuring him to do “whatever it takes” to win. Challenging him every step of the way is fierce, young Sierra León of the Democracy Project, who calls on him to listen to his better self and reject his party’s unsavory practices.
But if only his life were as simple as politics. Mayor Zamara is also grappling with being a suspect in his wife’s murder; fending off his father, who wants to rescue his failing business with city money; and satisfying his demanding new woman, the radiant and volatile Tory Singer, who may not be who she says she is.
Bones in the Wash Politics is Tough Family is Tougher eBook John Byrne Barry
Very insightful about how the election process really works...lies, dirty tricks, recruiting people to vote, etc. And it's ridiculous how people become so enamored with a candidate that they work their tails off trying to get him/her elected...not realizing that they are all the same. There's no difference between Republicans and Democrats, and the president is hand-picked to be elected and ruled by an elite few. When they want someone elected, he/she will be, no matter what. The author admitted to working for the Obama campaign. Now look at the havoc Obama has wreaked on the US, including usurping more and more freedoms by "executive order."
The book has only two of my pet-peeve errors: "laying low" and the use of " African American" when the people have been nowhere near Africa. What politically correct crap!

Bones in the Wash Politics is Tough Family is Tougher eBook John Byrne Barry Reviews
First - full disclosure - the author is my cousin. That's why I got the book. After reading Bones in the Wash...it doesn't matter that I'm related to John. This is a great book! I've reported on many political campaigns and I've worked on a few campaigns and I gotta say, even though the stories and characters in the book are more dramatic than in the "real" political world, the intense story lines and emotion generating characters in this book will take you inside the fascinating world of politics where personal connections and relationships often determine much of what happens in public. Like politics? Don't like politics? Doesn't matter - you'll enjoy this read!
I will confess to knowing the author, so I was prepared for an exciting read, but I was amazed to find that I liked it for so many different reasons. The mystery was truly a mystery and was hard to put down.. I always prefer books where the characters are well developed and I grow to relate to them and like them as a book progresses. This book was tops in this area. The politics were quite accurate in being an inside look at the way personalities can influence a campaign. And the descriptions of New Mexico were quite authentic......So all in all, very worth reading. I am recommending the book to others and am looking for more from the author.
Sadly, I can't really recommend this book. This is the first time I have read a book that involved a political campaign which was okay. The story dragged quite a bit. Also, I felt it bounced back and forth between the characters to much. Sorry but you wanted my honest opinion.
The novel pungently captures the frenetic chaos of working for a campaign. It reveals in ugly detail the depths to which the Party of No has descended -- so much so that it's hard to tell that this isn't nonfiction. Barry's characters are sharply etched and believable. The book generates nostalgia for a time when there was a Republican with integrity and when the Democrats hadn't yet become the party of illegal digital spying, drone kill lists, whistleblower prosecutions, corporate giveaways, and environmental nihilism. It reminds us of days when we once had Hope for a Change -- so I guess it really is fiction after all!
Good, fast moving plot. Interesting, well drawn characters. Especially interesting to read this as Obama nears the end of his second term given all he has done to change this country and the way he has governed. I was a little annoyed by the Republicans = bad, Democrats = good bit but I guess that is to be expected from someone who is an obvious Obama supported.
Freedom! Now I have choice back for how I spend my free time, after 5 days of being enmeshed in this compelling story. Congratulations to my friend, J.B. Barry on this wonderful novel! I was actually a bit surprised, since it’s been a while since wanted to read fiction, and even longer since I picked up a political thriller. And then, drawn in from the very beginning, I found myself “addicted”, reading after breakfast, on my commute, again after lunch and more before I turned the lights off to sleep over the last few days.
Moreover, when reading a novel, I often only peripherally pay attention to the details of the descriptions – of persons, the way they dress, their scents and their behaviors, as well as locations – maybe because I know little of the author’s world and experiences and I just assume they must be hyper-observant and very skillful at using this in their writing. Instead, I usually let that create the atmosphere and set up scenes and focus more on the feelings expressed and the events and action taking place. However, for Bones in the Wash, I found myself noticing the many hundreds of uses of language and observations to tell the story and effectively communicate personalities and the experiences of the protagonists. I kept wondering how the author knew about so many things, and then use them to so effectively enhance the storytelling, while still allowing the story to unfold in a believable way. Great book. Recommended.
If you can get past the author's ameturish writing style, and if you can get past the unimaginative characters, and if you can get past the lack of any semblance of a good story line, and if you are a liberal, then you might actually like this book for some reason beyond my personal understanding. However, if you appreciate good writing, then you would be smart to not even touch this book. It is terrible. Period.
